I agree that your project's complexity increased when you added a background and changed the effects of the words. I think that it is very unique and i like the idea of it.

I like how you put yourself in the front because it made the focus of the image on you and it looks dope. The image provokes a godly and religious vibe because of the background.

Individual Project

The process to create my own project was a little bit more challenging but fun.

It felt more interactive having to find our own images to use or as an inspiration. It was intriguing to look up images that interest you because then you wanted to continue searching.

It was helpful getting feedback because they helped me to build upon my ideas and think more outside the box.

I first started the project with the broad topic of makeup but then i narrowed it down and tried to connect the ideas of music and makeup and the expressive side to both.

I learned how to use more tools from photoshop on how to clear up the skin and make it look smoother in a natural way.

The concept of my project is to show the way music and makeup can be expressive ways to show who you are and how you feel. They can be very complex and extreme, but they can also be very simple and delicate. For example, the image of Gaby on the bottom right is one that shows a more calm expression of makeup and her personality. While on the other side, the woman's makeup is very bold and conveys a message. Along with the two small images below that, the one with the eye and the G clef symbol is a representation of music and makeup coming together, while the colorful g clef is music in general.

Combined Portrait

I used the healing brush to get rid of any blemishes on the faces. I also used it to get rid of any red spots. I used the patch tool to take an area that looked nice and smooth and put it on an area that looked more rough or black. I also used the patch tool to blend the skin colors together. I did not use the liquify tool. I didn't know about it. I used the dodge and burn tool to darken the chin because it was blurry. I used it also to brighten the under eyes. 

I am not to excited about it because my brother is messed up my project. He tilted his head and it made it harder for me to match our facial features. It was hard to get the blurry parts off of the chin, and the lips look weird. I noticed that our noses are similar and our lips also.

After watching the PBS video, I think that pictures can be very powerful and compelling. They speak to their viewers. A photographer usually has a strong meaning behind all of their work. For them, it is a way to express themselves and is a representation of their life or feelings. I felt very sympathetic for Bex Finch who's father had Alzheimer's. Her work was very powerful how she decided to take pictures of him and herself so that she can go through the journey with him. Pictures can speak a thousand words for some people, and it helps them to be able to relate to someone or something when they feel like no one understands them. Her work makes me think twice about photography and how much power it has. I understand it more now. I can relate to how a picture can influence someone in a such a big way. 

Photoshop & The Human Figure

It is relief being able to use the spot healing brush to get rid of blemishes and spots on my skin that I am more insecure about. The patch tool is great because I can get rid of spots under my eyes that make me look more tired or if I have makeup under them. The dodge and burn tool is fun because I the contoured look and I like experimenting with it. I did not use the liquify tool.

I completely agree with this statement and it relates to the photoshop app in general. There is always something that you don't see or realize in an image or a person or anything in general. Things can always be changed and altered to be perceived in a different way. 

A positive enhancements would be the brightening of the eyes to stress them or a contour of the face to highlight certain areas and give the person a more defined look.

A negative alteration would be trying to make a person look slimmer on any part of the body, because they are not "skinny" enough. Or, trying to make a body part bigger because it is not big enough and doesn't fit the "standard". 

Photo Collage Final

David Hockney's approach to photography is unique in the way in which he presents an image. He takes parts of the image to stress certain areas of a person or room/place. He layers different pieces of the image to make it look almost 3D.

Painting with the camera helps you approach taking picture in more of a realistic way. You are actual able to capture every part in a more focused way.

For my individual project, I wanted to stress the emotions of the face. I thought it would be interesting to make the eyes different on each side as if on one side of her face she was tired and the other she was kind of squinting as if she were annoyed. For her mouth, I put one side as her tongue being out like she's feeling crazy and happy. On the other side she has more of a serious/annoyed mouth.

I feel like the photographer that resonates with me the most is Paccarik Orue. The idea of taking away a moment from someone is interesting and something that I never thought about before. The way he asks permission before taking a picture is very thoughtful and polite. The items and people and situations that he takes pictures of have a story behind them that maybe you wouldn't even think about, and I like that. He takes images of relevant things that a lot of people can relate to.

I use images mined from the Internet to frame questions on the representation of conflict.

In exploring visual language through a process-intensive method of creating original patterns, I strive to make sense of media images and how they define our relationship to war.

I explore the relationship between perception and representation by drawing on concepts such as censorship, scale, and the body as a site of action or violence.

 Forcing antipodes together as a means to create new relationships between them, I aim to discuss the means by which repetition as a media strategy can affect our association with content.

Our visual vocabulary has been affected by the repetitive onslaught of media images.

MY SENTENCES

I think that using images from the internet is the perfect way to give people that opportunity to question the representation of conflict brought by the images.

I would question how you can use certain images to define our relationship to war.

I agree that perception and representation are a major way that we draw concepts in aspects of censorship, scale, and the body of violence and action.

Based on the idea of forcing images together to create a relationship between them is an effective way in accomplishing that.

I agree that our visual vocabulary is affected by the constant repetition of the attacks on the media images. 

This image is asymmetrical in balance. There is a sense of movement along the whole picture because of how there is repetition of the two women. I think that this image is trying to compare two unlike figures by bringing them together and using images that best represent them. In my opinion, comparing these two women together is the perfect way to get people to really think about how they have anything to do with each other or how they are very opposite. I found it interesting how she decided to do this.

Identity shows perspective and the way in which we feel and think.

She takes images from google searches, facebook, and popular websites.

She makes collages, and chooses images that come to together.

She was born in Iran.

The 4 panels of video are made from clips taken from 11 different hollywood movies.

The purpose of the art installation Threshold is to give people an experience of the multiples of perspective and to approach the same thing from many points of views.

She liked to use images of pop culture because they are of what we face everyday and shows us what people face in other places and they give us narratives.

We are visual creatures because we represent and give off certain vibes and feelings and have different stories.

Art is a process of giving because it brings something to the world in either an abstract way or other, and it gives spaces for conversation.

Gaby's: I agree that red bull is a problem is out society health wise. I think that the fact that they don't include the health his validates the that they are scared to let the consumers know what's really in the drink. From the way you played the words, I feel like he way in which you talk about the wings the way I am going to think about them.

Katherine's: I agree that social media does have negative effects of people with mental illnesses because sometimes when they see something that they can relate to, it's not always positive and can reinforce the negative feelings they feel. I think that the dark colors really give you a sad feeling. I agree that there is a sense of emphasis on the neon letters because they really pop and make you focus on them because of the dark background. 

Kawachi: I agree that rape of women is an underrated topic because of the way in which people try to justify those who were raped. From the examples you gave, I think that you have a strong stance on what you feel about the topic. I also agree that there is a sense of movement due to the way in which the words are angled. 

Maybelline Spoof Ad

I chose this topic because makeup is something that is a part of my daily life and something that interests me.

Makeup is a major issue in our society because there is a kind of expectation to look a certain way and to stay looking young. Our generation promotes to the young people to start using makeup at an early age. 

People don't want their children to grow up and be more like adults, and that's what makeup does to the younger people. There is also a sense that being who you are naturally isn't good enough and that makeup can cover it. But then again "you're perfect the way you are", and you have to "love yourself no matter what".

I am going to reveal a parody and shock value. I am trying to expose the effects of what makeup can do in the future in a way that does a play on the words of the slogan for Maybelline.

There is a sense of emphasis on the older woman in the mirror because of the girl being a young child on the opposite side of the mirror.

The depth of field is shallow because the background is blurry.

Spoof Advertisement

The message of this image is that young girls feel the need to wear makeup at such a young age. The designer is trying to say that the age in which young girls are stating to wear makeup is  getting younger and younger. This product is promoting young girls to act older then they are and giving a sense of sensuality that young girls shouldn't have. This industry tends to use young girls to represent their brand/product. I am going to use a shock value to stress the inappropriate nature of this advertisement.

There is a sense of emphasis on the young girls face by the way her hair is styled and how she is holding the teddy bear.

Te depth of field is shallow because there is no background.

Adbusters

This image represents how alcohol has the ability to end somebody's life. In my opinion, there is a negative view on alcohol given by this image. According to the artist, they feel that drinking is dangerous and can end your life. The facts serve as evidence as to alcohol being a danger to some peoples lives.

Photographer: Dorothea Lange
Dorothea Lange is an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist. She is best known for her depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). She traveled the world with one of her female friends, but settled in San Francisco. This photograph is symmetrical in balance. It has a deep depth of field, along with movement from each person. There is not really contrast, but there is emphasis on the women's face, due to her very sad expression. This photo makes you wonder what she is thinking about and how she if feeling, because she is obviously poor and struggling to take care of her sons. I chose this photo because I have seen it before and wanted to go deeper into the background of it.

Erik Meola is an American photographer who graduated from Syracuse University in 1968 and is self-taught in the art of photography. He has traveled throughout the world, and is recognized for the brilliant use of color in his photography. Erik received a Clio Award for his Timberland campaign and won the "Photographer of the Year" from the American Society of Media Photographers. This photograph is symmetrical in balance. The depth of field is deep. The movement is going from the center of the photo, which are the teeth, and going outward. There is contrast between the teeth and the face due to the bright white teeth and the purple, red, and blue colors on the face. This photo gives you a happy feeling due to the smile and bright colors. I chose this photo because i thought it looked cool and it caught my eye.

Reading Is Magical

I chose to focus on the experience of reading Matilda by Roald Dahl.

I want to promote reading a specific book because this book in particular is about the idea of reading but also a little girl that had to grow up at such a young age and has the ability to move things with her mind.

Reading is a unique way to transform what you are picturing in your mind and bringing it to life.

My concept for my design is to to represent what Matilda is thinking about and trying to get away from when she reads.

The composition of this image is asymmetrical in balance.

There is a sense of emphasis of the furniture and the people because they are popping out of the book.

Eye movement is created in the work by the the people being warped and coming out, and the text having an arch.

The depth of field is shallow because the background is blurry. 

The elements of the artwork evoke a sense of interest in what Gaby is reading in the book.

I want the viewer to wonder why those certain images are popping out of the book.

Camera as a Connector: Part 2

In this image, there is symmetrical balance. There is a sense of emphasis on the car since its in the center of the image and is the focus point. The car and all of the trees are very compact together. This gives you a sense of this car being at home because it looks like it has been in this spot for a very long time.

Camera as a Connector: Part 1

Paccarik asks permission before taking a photo because it's not his life to put out there on the internet. Its not his place to put peoples business out there, unless they want him to and don't mind. When he says "not to steal a moment in someone's life" he means he doesn't want to ruin a moment in their life or intrude. Paccarik tries to find people that he can relate to and that he connects with, because he went through the same thing when growing up. He films negative because it's the reality of what really goes on within the locations he photographs. His process is different because he takes a lot longer to take the pictures so he can actually absorb the moment and what's happening. In Peru, he emphasizes the life within the copper mines and compares them to daily life in Richmond or the other places, and stresses the contrast of the ways of life. The camera is a connecting point because it is what captures the moments and gives the ability to be able to share and show the different images from all over the world.
